During the 1998/99 season, City had dropped into the old Second Division after being relegated from the Premier League in 1996. The Blues finished third in the table, but earned promotion back into the First Division with a penalty shoot-out victory over Gillingham.

The 2024/25 Manchester City Away jersey is inspired by the one worn during that season, a shirt that immediately became a part of club history.

Like the original, wide neon yellow and navy blue horizontal stripes dominate, with thinner sky blue stripes in between.
